Residents of Pekhri village in Kullu's Tirthan valley have planted nearly 1,500 trees on two hectares of land near the village as part of a reforestation drive, according to Himalayan Ecotourism, a cooperative society based in the area.
According to the society, reforestation is being done in several parts of the valley, including a roadside stretch of nine kilometres from Gushaini to Pekhri. Reforestation in the two hectares near Pekhri was carried out for around two months, and last month, residents and government officials held a function to mark the conclusion of the effort.
Keshav Thakur, president of the society, said that the nursery of the forest department provided the residents with the saplings during the reforestation. Several species of trees were planted in the area, including Deodar and Amlook.
“It is only the beginning of 20 years of protection,” said the cooperative's co-founder and marketing advisor Stephan Marchal. He added that after the Covid pandemic disrupted tourism in the area, the ecotourism society turned its attention towards regenerating the local ecosystem.
